DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT
Inland Accounting Department
Glennie C Bench:
Inland’s Accounting Department provides the ability to track all
the activity of Southwest Georgia Oil Company. I know this sounds
like a thrill a minute to our sales people, supervisors, managers,
drivers and technicians. But to us, there’s nothing better than
having your debits match your credits!
Seriously, tracking all the activity of such a large and diverse
company is no easy task. It takes the dedication and hard work of
every person in the department to keep the wheels turning at Inland.
Some of the varied responsibilities of out department are:
- Ensuring that deposits are made at the store, making sure that
credit sales are captured and returned checks are collected.
- Tracking Inland credit card sales, billing and collecting over
3,000 credit accounts and providing customer service to out credit
card customers.
- Knowing when and where every gallon of fuel was delivered, paying
our suppliers for that fuel and paying at least a dozen taxing
authorities for excise and sales tax on those gallons.
- Maintaining the pricing of all the merchandise at the stores,
paying scores of vendors for those products as well as tracking
the cost and retail prices of every product sold at Inland.
- Counting inventory at each Inland location to ensure the process
is working well.
- Paying the almost 400 employees who work at Inland every week,
ensuring that our benefits (401k, insurance and bonuses) are paid
on behalf of the Inland employees and paying the payroll taxes
to the four states where our employees are located as well as
to the federal government.
We also administer workers’ compensation insurance, property
and liability insurance, sales tax payments, excise tax exemptions,
mortgage payments, audits by taxing authorities, financial audits,
past due receivables, bank reconciliations, and generating financial
statements each month.
Of course as long as all the paperwork is correct when we get it,
doing all the things on this list is easy, right? And , of course,
the paperwork is always right, right? Well, we know that’s
not possible and that’s the other reason we work so hard in
our accounting department. When the debits don’t match the
credits, it’s up to us to figure out exactly what happened
and help fix it! So the next time you call the Inland office and
ask for a member of the Inland Accounting department, please thank
them for taking care of all this “stuff” – because
supporting the operations of Southwest Georgia Oil Company is what
the Inland Accounting Department is all about!
